Home EV Charger Installation in Saudi Arabia: A Practical Guide
Thinking about installing a home EV charger? Here's a practical guide covering charger types, what to check before installation, and what to expect from the process.

A home EV charger turns daily charging from a chore into something you barely notice — plug in when you get home, drive away in the morning with a full battery. But before you buy a charger and call an electrician, there are several things worth understanding. Here's a practical guide based on common questions from EV owners in Saudi Arabia.
Understand the charger levels. Level 1 charging uses a standard household outlet and adds a small amount of range per hour — it's slow and only practical as a backup or for plug-in hybrids. Level 2 chargers use a dedicated circuit and can charge at 7.4 kW on single-phase power or higher with three-phase. For most Saudi EV owners, a 7.4 kW Level 2 charger is the right starting point — it can fully charge most EVs overnight.
Know your home's electrical setup before buying anything. A site survey by a qualified electrician is the right first step. They check your panel capacity, wiring condition, the distance from the panel to your parking spot, and whether you have single-phase or three-phase power. Newer Riyadh and Jeddah villas often have three-phase available; older homes may not. Your charger choice depends on what your home actually supports.
Consider where the charger will live. Outdoor mounting is common in Saudi Arabia and exposes the charger to heat, sun, and dust. Look for an IP54 or higher weather protection rating, and ideally a shaded location or a small protective cover. Indoor mounting in a garage is easier on the electronics and usually preferred when possible.
Choose the right connector. Most non-Tesla EVs in Saudi Arabia use a Type 2 connector — this is the standard. Tesla vehicles use a Tesla-specific connector and the Tesla Wall Connector is the cleanest option for Tesla-only households. Some chargers have a tethered cable; others have a socket where you plug in your own cable. Tethered is more convenient day-to-day; socket types are more flexible if you have multiple EVs with different connectors.
Features that actually matter: ground fault protection, app connectivity for scheduling charging during off-peak hours, an adjustable current limit so you can match the charger to your home's available capacity, and a cable long enough to reach your parking spot comfortably. Smart features that sound impressive but you'll rarely use are usually not worth paying extra for.
Well-known charger brands available in Saudi Arabia include Wallbox, ABB, Schneider Electric, Tesla Wall Connector, and EVBox. There are also lower-priced Chinese-made options. Whichever brand you choose, prioritize a manufacturer with a real warranty and local support — Saudi summer is harder on outdoor electronics than most climates.
For the physical installation, our sister company Climatech is SEC-certified and installs all the major brands above (Wallbox, ABB, Schneider, EVBox, Alpitronic, Alfanar) with full civil works across the Kingdom. EVS handles maintenance and extended warranty, Climatech handles installation — one customer journey, two specialized teams.
Common installation mistakes to avoid: using extension cords or non-dedicated outlets, hiring an electrician with no EV charger experience, skipping the load assessment, mounting the charger in direct afternoon sun, and using non-weatherproof cabling on outdoor runs. Each of these can cause anything from frequent breaker trips to fire risk over time.
