EVs, Hybrids & Range Extenders: What's the Difference and Why It Matters for Maintenance
Not all electrified vehicles are the same. Understanding whether you drive a pure EV, hybrid, or range extender helps you maintain it properly.

The world of electrified vehicles can be confusing. You've got pure electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range extender vehicles — each with different powertrains and different maintenance needs. Understanding what you drive is the first step to keeping it running smoothly.
Pure electric vehicles like Tesla, BYD Atto 3, and Zeekr run entirely on battery power. They have no combustion engine, no exhaust system, and no traditional transmission. Maintenance focuses on the battery, electric motors, software, brakes, and suspension. They're the simplest mechanically but require specialized knowledge for high-voltage systems.
Hybrid vehicles combine a combustion engine with an electric motor and a smaller battery. Toyota and Lexus hybrids are popular examples in Saudi Arabia. These need both traditional maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, transmission fluid) AND electric system care. The battery is smaller but still needs monitoring, and the regenerative braking system requires specialized attention.
Range extender vehicles — like the LiXiang L7, L8, and L9 — are an interesting middle ground. They have a large battery for electric driving plus a small combustion engine (typically a 1.5L turbo) that acts as a generator to charge the battery when it runs low. The engine never directly drives the wheels; it only generates electricity. These cars need maintenance that combines EV expertise with engine servicing. The generator engine needs its own oil changes and standard engine maintenance schedule.
At EVS, we service all three types. Our technicians are trained on pure EVs, hybrids, and range extender vehicles alike. Whether you drive a Tesla, a Lexus hybrid, or a LiXiang with its generator-battery system, we have the equipment and expertise to maintain it properly. Don't take your electrified vehicle to a regular workshop — specialized service makes all the difference.
