What Affects EV Maintenance Costs in Saudi Arabia

EVs are usually cheaper to maintain than petrol cars because they have far fewer moving parts. There's no oil to change, and there are no spark plugs, transmission fluid, exhaust system, timing belts or fuel filters. Regenerative braking makes brake pads last much longer than in a petrol car. For routine service, EV owners typically pay less over the years of ownership than owners of comparable petrol SUVs.

Key factor 1 is the climate. Saudi heat is one of the hardest environments for any vehicle. High temperatures stress the battery cooling system, clog cabin filters faster, harden rubber seals and put extra load on the AC compressor. EVs driven through 45°C+ summers need attention more often than the same model in a cooler climate. In Saudi Arabia, plan to replace the cabin filter every year, whatever the manual says.

Key factor 2 is the brand and parts availability. Tesla, BYD and Mercedes have established service networks in Saudi Arabia, so parts and service are fairly easy to get. Newer Chinese brands (Zeekr, LiXiang, Voyah, Avatr, NIO, XPeng) sometimes need parts sourced from overseas, which can add wait time and cost. When you buy an EV, consider the brand's parts availability as well as the purchase price.

Key factor 3 is how you drive. A daily commuter driving 1,500 km a month will see different wear from someone driving 3,000+ km a month with frequent fast charging. Heavy fast charging speeds up battery degradation. Aggressive driving wears tires faster, and because EVs are heavier, this matters more. City stop-and-go driving is gentler on tires but harder on brake fluid; highway driving is the opposite.

What needs regular attention on an EV in Saudi Arabia: • Cabin filter. It clogs faster because of dust and sand, so replace it every year. • Tires. EV-specific tires last longer if you rotate them regularly. Skip the rotation and you'll replace them sooner than you should. • Brake fluid. Test it periodically on the manufacturer's schedule (intervals vary by brand and model). • Battery health check. A yearly diagnostic catches problems while they're still cheap to fix. • Coolant. Inspect and replace the battery thermal management coolant on the manufacturer's schedule. Don't let any workshop put standard engine coolant in your EV. • Software updates. They matter for performance, efficiency and bug fixes. Some arrive over the air; others need a workshop visit.

Where EVs can cost more than petrol cars: tires (a heavier car with instant torque wears them faster if you neglect them), specialized service that needs EV-trained technicians, and some components, such as the high-voltage battery once it's out of warranty. On the other hand, you skip oil changes, transmission service, exhaust repairs and most engine-related maintenance entirely.

What about big repairs? The high-voltage battery is the most expensive part of any EV. Modern EV batteries are designed to last hundreds of thousands of kilometers, and most are covered by the manufacturer's warranty for 8 years or more. If a battery does fail, module-level repair is sometimes possible. Replacing one bad module costs far less than replacing the whole pack. A specialized EV workshop can diagnose this; a general garage usually can't.
