How to Choose the Best EV Workshop in Riyadh: A Buyer's Checklist

1. Ask about high-voltage certification. A proper EV workshop has technicians trained and certified to work on high-voltage systems (usually 400V or 800V). If the answer is vague or the staff seem unsure, walk away. Working on a high-voltage system without the right training is dangerous for the technician and for your car. 2. Check their diagnostic equipment. Ask which diagnostic tools they use. Generic OBD2 scanners cannot read EV-specific fault codes or battery cell data, and they cannot do ECU programming. A real EV workshop has manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment (or equivalent third-party tools like Autel EV, Topdon or Launch X-431 EV) that can communicate with battery management systems and power electronics.

3. Verify brand experience. If you drive a Tesla, a BYD or a Chinese import, ask how many cars of that brand they serviced in the past year. A workshop that claims to handle everything but has never opened a Tesla battery pack is the wrong place to start. Ask for photos or references if you're unsure.

4. Look at the workshop itself. A dedicated EV service bay should have insulated flooring, high-voltage safety barriers, battery handling equipment and a dry, clean work area. A dusty corner of a general garage is a red flag for any EV service, especially battery work.

5. Ask about warranty implications. A good workshop tells you upfront whether its service affects your manufacturer warranty and documents everything in detailed digital records. If they can't explain how their service protects your warranty, that's a bad sign.

6. Get a written quote before any work. Reputable EV workshops give written quotes with clear line items for labor, parts, diagnostics and any extras. 7. Check whether they can update software. Can they update your vehicle's firmware, battery management system and ECUs? Many Chinese imports and older EVs need manual software updates. If the workshop can't do them, you miss performance improvements and bug fixes that could extend your battery life.

8. Read independent reviews. Google reviews, Snapchat testimonials and WhatsApp recommendations from EV owners in Riyadh tell you more than polished marketing. Look for specific mentions of EV work, not just general car service.

9. Ask about spare parts. EV parts can be harder to find than petrol car parts, especially for Chinese brands. A workshop with established suppliers and stock of common EV parts will get you back on the road faster.

10. Location and trust matter. An EV service center that has operated for several years, has a physical address you can visit and lets you see the workshop before you commit is a much safer choice than an anonymous mobile mechanic.

Red flags to walk away from immediately: refusal to show their diagnostic equipment, no written quotes, claims that 'all cars are basically the same', pressure to leave the car without a clear scope of work, or offers to clear warning lights without explaining the root cause.
