1. Ask about high-voltage certification. A proper EV workshop should have technicians trained and certified to work on high-voltage systems (usually 400V or 800V). If the answer is vague or the staff seems unsure, walk away. Working on a high-voltage system without the right training is dangerous for both the technician and your car. 2. Check their diagnostic equipment. Ask which diagnostic tools they use. Generic OBD2 scanners cannot read EV-specific fault codes, battery cell data, or perform ECU programming. A legitimate EV workshop will have manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment (or equivalent third-party tools like Autel EV, Topdon, or Launch X-431 EV) that can communicate with battery management systems and power electronics.

3. Verify brand experience. If you drive a Tesla, a BYD, or a Chinese import, ask how many of those brands they've serviced in the past year. A workshop that claims to handle everything but has never opened a Tesla battery pack is not the place to start. Ask for photos or references if you're unsure.

4. Look for a proper workshop environment. A dedicated EV service bay should have insulated flooring, high-voltage safety barriers, battery handling equipment, and a dry, clean work area. A dusty corner of a general-purpose garage is a red flag for any EV service, especially battery work.

5. Ask about warranty implications. A good workshop will tell you upfront whether their service affects your manufacturer warranty and will document everything with detailed digital records. If they can't explain how their service protects your warranty, that's a bad sign.

6. Get a written quote before any work. Reputable EV workshops provide written quotes with clear line items — labor, parts, diagnostics, and any extras. 8. Read independent reviews. Google reviews, Snapchat testimonials, and WhatsApp recommendations from actual EV owners in Riyadh matter more than flashy marketing. Look for specific mentions of EV work, not just general car service.

9. Ask about spare parts. EV parts can be harder to source than petrol car parts, especially for Chinese brands. A workshop with established supplier relationships and a parts inventory for common EV components will get you back on the road faster.

10. Location and trust matter. An EV service center that has been operating for multiple years, has a physical address you can visit, and welcomes you to see the workshop before committing is a much safer bet than an anonymous mobile mechanic.

Red flags to walk away from immediately: refusal to show their diagnostic equipment, no written quotes, claims that 'all cars are basically the same', pressuring you to leave the car without a clear scope of work, or offering to remove error lights without explaining the root cause.
