10 Proven Tips to Maximize Your EV Range in Saudi Summer

Saudi Arabia's summer heat is one of the toughest environments for electric vehicles. High temperatures affect battery chemistry, increase AC demand, and can significantly reduce your range. Here are 10 proven tips to maximize your EV range during the hot months.

1. Pre-condition while plugged in: Start your AC while your car is still charging. This cools the cabin using grid power instead of battery power, saving 5-10% of your range.

2. Park in the shade: This seems obvious, but it makes a massive difference. A car parked in direct Saudi sun can reach 70°C inside. Shaded parking means less energy needed to cool the cabin when you start driving.

3. Use recirculation mode: Set your AC to recirculation rather than fresh air. Cooling already-cool cabin air is much more efficient than cooling 45°C outside air.

4. Set your AC to 23-24°C, not lower: Every degree below 23°C increases energy consumption significantly. Using the seat cooler (if available) along with 24°C AC feels just as comfortable as 20°C AC but uses much less energy.

5. Check your tire pressure: Heat increases tire pressure, which is actually good for range (lower rolling resistance). But check that your tires aren't over-inflated beyond the maximum safe pressure. The ideal pressure for range is typically 2-3 PSI above the door sticker recommendation.

6. Drive smoothly: Hard acceleration is the single biggest range killer. Use eco mode, accelerate gently, and maintain a steady speed. On the highway, driving at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h can improve range by 15-20%.

7. Plan your charging: In summer, charge to 80% for daily driving rather than 90%. High-temperature charging above 80% is slower and puts more stress on the battery. Save the 100% charge for when you actually need the extra range.

8. Use regenerative braking: Maximize your regenerative braking setting. In stop-and-go traffic common in Riyadh and Jeddah, strong regen can recover significant energy.

9. Keep your battery cool: If possible, don't fast charge when your battery is already hot. The battery management system will throttle the charging speed anyway, and hot charging accelerates degradation. Charge in the evening when temperatures drop.

10. Maintain your EV: A well-maintained EV gets better range. Clean cabin filters, proper tire alignment, correct tire inflation, and up-to-date software all contribute to optimal range. Schedule a summer preparation service at EVS — covering mechanical maintenance and battery health checks — to ensure your EV is ready for the heat.
